Copy file creation date

Is there any way to change this behaviour in Windows? It is very annoying that when you restore or copy a folder, the new folder has the creation date of current date, instead of the original creation date. People tend to look for old folders which do no longer exist when you have copied or moved those folders.

Hi Kyung E, There's no way to do this in windows. The Windows design is that the creation date refers to the file, while the modification date refers to the contents. If the creation date is really important to you, you could adjust it after the copy with a utility. The easiest way is to right click on the file and drag it to your destination folder. If you move it, the create date will not change. Yes, Robocopy is available in Windows 7.

That's strange. I've tried copying a file using File. At every run the the creation date is the same, even though that is now 5 minutes ago. It almost looks like Windows is caching the creation date or something. Add a comment. Active Oldest Votes. Brian R. Bondy Brian R. Bondy k gold badges silver badges bronze badges. If you want to change the last modified date or other file attributes on Windows 10, your first thought may be to do so using the Properties menu for a file in Windows File Explorer. It will remove other personal data, however, such as author name for documents, ratings for media files, as well as set a file to read-only or hidden.

The attrib command from the Windows PowerShell allows you to view and change file attributes for Windows 10 files. This is a fairly complex method, but also quite limited. If you want an easier way to change file attributes, use the Attribute Changer app listed below. Third-party apps like Attribute Changer exist to make this far easier, as well as allowing you to change the last modified date and more.

Attribute Changer offers the best way to change file attributes on Windows.
